What to do in case of power failure or defective component?

We have also thought of this. There must be no safety risk in any operating state. This is quite unique and only implemented by BRUNNER. All components are monitored by the control system. Safety-relevant components, such as the door contact, are duplicated or equipped with additional sensors. The same applies to the servomotor of the combustion air damper. The BRUNNER safety concept requires feedback that the combustion air damper is in the correct position. This monitoring function is performed by the internal data bus system. Experience and knowledge are essential for the smooth and faultless operation of the controls. In case of a power failure, an "emergency program" is started. A standard integrated battery provides the required power to ensure that the combustion air damper opens completely, and can still be moved to the safety position. No matter in which operating state the stove may be, the current heating gases can always escape through the chimney and do no harm.

Feedback for optimised heating behaviour

BRUNNER controls not only regulate the combustion air supply. They also detect typical errors in the wood feed. Too little, humid or unsuitable firewood leads to operating indications. These important feedbacks contribute significantly to enhanced user behaviour and combustion quality. This not only protects the environment, but also saves money.

Electronic combustion control

If you want it perfect, you should install the BRUNNER electronic combustion control "EAS". Just ignite - add fuel - and let the control system do the rest. The result: perfect efficiency, since the EAS servomotor never forgets to readjust or close the combustion air at the end of a burn-off. A particularly practical feature in case your heater can no longer be operated after the kindling. Either because you go to bed or you leave the house.

With the EAS electronic combustion air control system by Brunner, proper heating becomes child's play. It saves wood and cash.

Heating functions for EOS stove control as a standard solution

If a BRUNNER heating centre (BHZ) is not installed because a buffer tank system is available, the existing heating can still be displayed on the touch display. With the same operating elements and menu navigation as with the BHZ, the heating can be installed with the EOS to provide a system solution. Existing heat generators, pumps, mixers and sensors are connected to the BRUNNER expansion board. The decisive factor here is the technically correct configuration of the hydraulics and sensor positions on the buffer tank. The classic heating construction solution with central control. A challenge for a professional heating installation company.

Negative pressure safety control

It saves lives: the BRUNNER negative pressure safety control USA monitors the air and negative chimney pressure during the combustion process.It switches off all ventilation systems, for example cooker hoods, if the pressure difference is no longer sufficient for a safe fireplace operation. This way, tiled stoves and fireplaces can be installed and operated smoothly - regardless of the air technology installed in the building.

The BRUNNER negative pressure safety control "USA" monitors the air and negative chimney pressure during the combustion process.

  • It switches off all ventilation system when the pressure difference is no longer sufficient for a safe fireplace operation.
  • This prevents heating gases from flowing into the living area in the event of a defective ventilation systems

Controls that are easy to understand

System safety, optimum emission values and ease of operation were the starting point why BRUNNER was the first to develop stove controls for wood fire inserts back in 1990. With over 100,000 units installed, the EOS is the most successful and best-selling control system in fireplace and tiled stove construction. BRUNNER stove controls take into account all the peculiarities and possible disturbing influences of a fire. Simply place the wood on the stove, light it up and the heat is released automatically - the desired long ember retention times are thus guaranteed. With the EAS 2 and EOS 8, the 8th generation represents the current state of the art in fireplace and tiled stove controls. Combined with other system solutions by Brunner, the complete heat management of a building can be centrally controlled and clearly displayed on a touch display.

Electronic combustion control EAS

Inexpensive combustion air control for fireplaces and storage heaters

"A wood fire stove system is only as good as the fuel and the operation" - a prerequisite is therefore not only a good wood fire stove system but also the knowledge of how to "properly" heat with wood. Wood must not be too humid or consist only of coarse pieces. The right air supply is especially important. The combustion air is usually adjusted manually using an adjusting element. If the combustion air is not set properly, the unwanted effects of incomplete combustion will occur: a heavily sooted glass, unburnt wood residues, low glowing times and unpleasant odours outside. This can be largely avoided with the BRUNNER stove control. Simply place the wood on the stove, ignite it and the complete combustion process up to the glowing phase is regulated automatically.Your presence is not required during the burning process. For stoves and fireplaces that only require combustion air control, the electronic combustion control is used in the current version as EAS 2. This inexpensive combustion air automation technology covers the most important functions for almost all fireplaces - the standard for operating comfort and safety in stoves and fireplaces.

In addition to combustion air automation, a wide variety of components of a modern stove and heating system can be controlled and displayed. Simple and intuitive operation is absolutely essential, especially for complex heating solutions. Over many years, we have continued to develop the graphic interface of the touch display into a self-explanatory information and operating unit. Typical areas of application for the EOS are water-bearing stove and fireplace systems. But the EOS is also used for motorised control functions and additional sensors. The heating centre by BRUNNER is a completely pre-assembled, turnkey heating and storage system. It is designed for the connection and "management" of several different heat generators, especially for the integration of water-bearing stove and fireplace systems. The eco-hierarchical mode of operation is adapted to the use of regenerative heat carriers. To this end, we have continuously optimised the hydraulics and control functions over the past 20 years. Whether in a new system or in a heating system modernisation with existing components (e.g. hot water tank, old oil boiler), the heating centre integrates all heat generators into the building services and optimises the interaction between heat generation, collection and distribution.

Negative pressure safety control USA

Safety for the operation of fireplaces and stoves with ventilation systems.

What to do if there is a ventilation system in the building or an extractor hood in the installation area of the fireplace? In the event of a defective ventilation system or when the kitchen fan is in operation, there is a risk that a critical negative pressure will build up in the immediate vicinity of the combustion chamber. In extreme cases, the flue gases can no longer escape through the chimney, but are literally sucked into the living area. To prevent this, there have been regulations since 2006 according to which ventilation systems, extractor hoods and room air-dependent fireplaces may only be installed and operated together if a safety shutdown occurs in the event of a critical negative pressure in the area of the fireplace. This is exactly why we have developed our negative pressure safety control (USA).

Principle of negative pressure monitoring

The negative pressure monitoring unit is placed in a flush-mounted box in the immediate vicinity of the stove. It contains a highly sensitive vacuum sensor that monitors the differential pressure between the stove and the installation room. If the negative pressure reaches critical values due to a malfunction or uncoordinated behaviour of the ventilation system, a safety shutdown of the responsible ventilation systems takes place. Short-term pressure fluctuations, which can be caused by gusts of wind at the chimney or by opening windows and doors, are filtered out. The negative pressure safety control is perfectly matched to almost all wood-fired stove systems that are fired under natural draught conditions and have an outside air connection, and is officially approved (DIBt; number: Z-85.1-8). The negative pressure monitoring can of course also be used in such a way that several ventilation systems or kitchen fans are monitored.

The combustion air can be controlled manually with just one operating element (lever). Effortless and easy to understand. The symbols on the glass provide additional support.

Of course, the white display (EAS) shows that it can also be operated automatically. The most convenient version is the combination with an electronic combustion control (EAS). All you have to do is light the stove or add fuel, the control system takes care of everything else. High efficiency is the result, because the EAS servomotor never forgets to readjust and always stops the combustion air supply at the end of the burn-off. This is particularly convenient if the stove cannot be operated any further after its kindling, either because you go to bed or you leave the house.

  • The EAS is an inexpensive combustion control for fireplaces and storage heaters.
  • It helps you to heat "properly" with wood. Because when burning - apart from wood that is not too humid or too coarse - the most important thing is the right air supply. If the combustion air, which is normally set manually, is not adjusted properly, this leads to the unwanted side-effects of incomplete combustion: a very sooty viewing glass, unburnt wood residues, low glowing times, unpleasant odours outside.
  • This can be largely avoided with the electronic combustion control by BRUNNER. Simply place the wood, ignite it and the complete burning process will be regulated automatically up to the glowing phase.
  • No presence required during the combustion process. 
  • Consumer-friendly, easy-to-understand user interface with various graphic elements and symbols.
  • Combined with other system solutions by BRUNNER, the complete heat management of a building can be controlled centrally and displayed clearly on the touch display.
  • All components are monitored by the control system. This monitoring function is carried out by the internal data bus system.
  • Safety-relevant components, for example the door contact switch, are secured twice or equipped with additional sensors. The component works correctly only if both signals match.
  • This also applies to the servomotor of the combustion air damper. The BRUNNER safety concept requires feedback that the damper is in the correct position.
  • "Emergency program" in the event of a power failure: A standard integrated battery provides the required power to ensure that the combustion air damper can still be moved into the safety position. Thus, the existing heating gases can always emit through the chimney; no matter in which operating condition your tiled stove or fireplace might be.
  • With more than 100,000 units installed, the EOS has been one of the best-selling controls in tiled stove and fireplace construction since its introduction in 1991. All BRUNNER furnaces can be equipped or even retrofitted with the furnace control at any time.
  • Typical applications for the EOS are water-bearing tiled stove and fireplace systems. But the stove control is also always used for motorised positioning functions and additional sensors.
  • Apart from placing and lighting firewood, all operating steps are fully automate: The control unit regulates the servomotor of the air damper, which determines the amount of combustion air through a tightly closed flap. Via the control panel switch on the door, the control system recognises when the combustion starts and is able to optimally control it via a sensor in the combustion chamber.
  • The control panel behind a robust front glass informs you about the progress of the combustion, the current combustion temperatures and much more. There is no simpler and more efficient way to burn wood.
  • Over many years, we have continued to modify the graphic interface of the touch display into a self-explanatory information and operating unit. By touching the individual text and graphic areas, the displayed functions and information are visualised.
  • Brunner system controls can be updated via the USB connection on the touch display. This way, your EOS always remains state-of-the-art.
  • Unique in safety: All components are constantly checked for their function. For this purpose, double door contact switches are installed.
  • In the event of a component fault or a power failure, a 9-volt battery guarantees safe operation. In this case, the furnace can also be operated manually.
  • Since 2006 lawmakers have been calling for a monitoring unit for the operation of manual fireplaces in dense buildings with ventilation systems or extraction hoods. For this reason, BRUNNER has developed the negative pressure safety control "USA". It ensures that heating gases cannot flow into the living area, if the ventilation system malfunctions or when the kitchen hood is being operated simultaneously.
  • The air extracting devices, including tumble dryer, are capable of creating such a strong negative pressure that toxic gases like carbon monoxide are no longer drawn through the chimney, but are draught into the living area. An extraction hood can create a dangerous negative pressure within five to ten seconds. The life-threatening gases are not visible and usually odourless.
  • If there is a critical negative pressure in the area of the fireplace, the USA interrupts the operation of the air extraction systems. Only when the required pressure level is reached does the safety switch reactivate the systems.
  • The USA is placed in the immediate vicinity of the stove. During combustion, the control unit monitors the differential pressure between the stove and the installation room. Short-term pressure fluctuations caused by gusts of wind at the chimney or by opening windows and doors are filtered out by the USA.
  • The protective function is the sole purpose of the negative pressure sensor. A display was therefore deliberately omitted. The USA is easy to operate and DIBt-tested.          A red and a green light-emitting diode are sufficient to indicate the operating state. If the red LED is lit, a clear safety risk has occurred.
  • For the "USA" BRUNNER relies on proven, high-end aircraft technology. For example, a barometric can is used to measure the differential pressure, the expansion of which is recorded and processed electronically. The sophisticated precision mechanics are of high-quality, durable and guarantee an exact and extremely sensitive measurement accuracy for many years, without the need for replacement or maintenance.
  • As an alternative to USA 3, BRUNNER has now introduced the brand-new USA 4 onto the market. Instead of the barometric pressure transmitter, a piezocrystalline pressure sensor is installed in the fourth generation safety control, which no longer requires calibration.
